Who is the new signing for Holstein Kiel?
Holstein Kiel have signed 31‑year‑old centre‑back Sebastian Schonlau from Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The deal is performance‑based and Schonlau is expected to slot straight into the starting eleven. With nearly 300 professional appearances, he brings a wealth of experience to the Kiel harbour.
Why does the transfer matter?
Schonlau began his career at SC Paderborn 07, playing there from 2012 to 2021 with only a short loan to SC Verl. In 2021 he moved to Hamburger SV and helped the club achieve promotion back to the Bundesliga in 2025. Coach Tim Walter knows him well – they worked together for three seasons, and Walter stresses that Schonlau already internalised the KSV’s playing philosophy.
What does the management say?
Olaf Rebbe, sporting director of the KSV, praises the new player’s personality and experience: “Sebastian is a player with great experience and an extraordinary personality.” Tim Walter adds that Schonlau is “an absolute leader” who will immediately stabilise the defence. Schonlau himself is delighted: “I’m happy to be here in Kiel… I want to start right away, meet the guys and give it my all.”
How is Holstein Kiel performing right now?
Holstein Kiel sit 12th in the 2. Bundesliga with 41 points from 34 games (11 wins, 8 draws, 15 losses) and a recent run of LLWWW. The team has scored 44 goals and conceded 48, a -4 goal difference. Their last result was a 2‑1 defeat to Dynamo Dresden on 17 May 2026. They are 29 points behind leaders FC Schalke 04.
What does this mean for the future?
With Schonlau added to the squad, the club hopes to shore up the back line and snap the losing streak. The seasoned defender is expected to lead both on the pitch and in training. If he settles quickly, Holstein Kiel could stabilise their next matches and push the relegation battle back.
