Who has returned?

Holstein Kiel has brought former HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau back from Vancouver. The 31‑year‑old centre‑back signed a performance‑based contract on July 4 2026 and is ready for the upcoming season. Schonlau, who most recently played for the Whitecaps FC, adds over 260 appearances across the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga and 3. Liga.

Why does the transfer matter?

Tim Walter, Kiel’s head coach, stresses that Schonlau is not only a strong defender but also a leader. “We gain an absolute leadership figure and a very experienced centre‑back who has internalised our playing philosophy,” Walter said. The former Hamburg captain is expected to stabilise the back line and counter recent defeats.

What connections exist?

Schonlau already knows several Kiel players from his HSV days. Jonas Meffert, also a Hamburg native, will reunite with an old teammate. Additionally, Schonlau was at Hamburger SV from 2021 to 2025 before moving to Vancouver. His previous spells at SC Paderborn (2015‑2021) and SC Verl (2014/15) round out a broad experience portfolio.

How does this fit the current season?

Holstein Kiel currently sits 12th in the 2. Bundesliga with 41 points from 34 games (11 wins, 8 draws, 15 losses) and most recently lost 2‑1 to Dynamo Dresden on May 17 2026. The side has failed to win in its last five matches (LLLLL). With 44 goals scored and 48 conceded (‑4 goal difference), the club sits mid‑table, 29 points behind leaders FC Schalke 04. Schonlau’s arrival is aimed at tightening the defence and steering the team away from a relegation battle.
